Crime Scene Technician Certificate Program
The Criminal Justice Institute’s Crime Scene Technician Certificate Program (CSTCP) is comprised of six fundamental courses that introduce each of the vital components of crime scene investigation. Students are taken through lectures and practical exercises that enhance their knowledge and skills on photography; latent prints; impression evidence; biological and trace evidence; crime scene sketching, note taking, and report writing; and crime scene investigation. Participants are required to attend and successfully pass all six courses to receive their certificate. After successful completion of all six components, students will have met the minimum requirements necessary for application for certification as a crime scene specialist through the International Association for Identification (IAI).
Application Requirements
To participate in this program, an application letter must be submitted to Dr. Cheryl P. May from the Chief of Police, Sheriff, Department Head or Director. In this letter, he or she should indicate how the officer in this program will benefit the agency and state that he/she will support the officer’s attendance as well as ensure, to the best of their ability, participation in all six courses. Application letters must be received at CJI by the date noted in CJI’s course catalog. Once all application letters have been received and reviewed, twenty participants will be chosen and their agency heads will be notified in writing of their acceptance.
Photographic Equipment Requirements
Because photographic skills are critical in crime scene and evidence documentation, we also require each department to make a minimum amount of photography equipment available to their agency representative. A list of the required photography equipment is presented below. If you have any questions concerning the photography equipment requirement, please feel free to contact Dr. Cheryl May at (501) 570-8052.
